Breastfed babies younger than 6 months may have golden-yellow, slightly shaped and slightly fragrant poop 5 to 6 times a day. Older children have yellow or brown, more distinctive odor, thicker and shaped poop 2 to 4 times a day.
Depending on the foods eaten, there may be daily changes in the color and odor of the stool. If a baby or child has a significant increase in the number of stools per day compared to previous days, if the stool has become very watery and gassy, if the stool has a heavy odor, if there is a significant change in stool color and if there is mucus or blood in the stool, diarrhea has started.
In addition to diarrhea, the patient may experience vomiting, abdominal pain, high fever, decreased appetite, extreme weakness, and drowsiness.
Summer diarrhea should not be taken lightly. The biggest reason why diarrhea is dangerous is the removal of water and salts such as sodium and potassium from the body through vomiting and watery stools. If timely and effective treatment is not applied, the condition of children can quickly worsen due to salt and water loss. As a result, the patient may be hospitalized, go into shock, and even die.
A pediatrician should be consulted immediately if a child with diarrhea has at least 1 of the following characteristics:
- If the baby or child is pooping much more frequently and in greater amounts than usual,
- If the patient's sucking or feeding is significantly weakened,
- If they have severe and frequent vomiting,
- If the armpit fever exceeds 38.5 degrees and its duration has exceeded 48 hours,
- If 5 – 6 days have passed since the diarrhea started,
- If you have severe abdominal pain,
- If the amount of urine has decreased a lot compared to the previous days
- If tears do not flow when crying,
- If the tongue is not wet but sticky or dry,
- If there is blood or mucus in the stool,
- Wishing you a summer full of health, peace and happiness
